Review of the Night in the Woods adventure

Night in the Woods review

Night in the Woods is a game that showcases, in a playful and sometimes even absurd way, the difficulties faced by 20 year olds. As they enter adulthood, young boys and girls often feel the pressures of society. They seem to have no problems, but everyone demands something from you, forces you to do something.

This puzzle game is perfect for those who love solitary adventures. An important part of the game is the solution to uncomplicated puzzles. The game has not only a stylish design, but also an immersive soundtrack. The puzzle game is in platformer genre, which at first sight makes the player think he is playing a child’s romp, as the major part of the gameplay is jumping, climbing ladders and wires and of course collecting items. About the game itself and similar games can be found here https://parentalapp.net/.

The protagonist of the game is an anthropomorphic cat named Mae Borowski who is going through a difficult period in her 20s. The fluffy daredevil has decided to give up her studies and return to her small, quiet town. Except that this seemingly all-consuming silence and boredom is actually far from it.

Plot details

May’s hometown of Opossum Springs is facing a lot of adversity. It is quietly and slowly dying, as evidenced by the mass closure of businesses. The residents’ once quiet mood has been replaced by a prolonged despondency, as they have lost their jobs and the meaning of life.

Everything May experiences as she goes along, she writes down in her diary. She comments on certain details. Against this backdrop, the main action of the game takes place. Thus begins a close encounter with the city, its inhabitants, and the revelation of the heroine’s own past. As it develops, the plot becomes tangled, and the story takes on a completely different appearance.

Strange things begin to happen. A creepy kidnapping story unfolds, even ghosts appear. May gets involved in all this, but she is kept company by Gregg the fox and Angus the bear. Also present is a crocodile girl named Beatrice, who is the protagonist’s best friend.

Night in the Woods puzzle review

May’s typical day looks rather formulaic and at first glance quite calm and boring. She gets out of bed, checks messengers, talks to her family, goes for a walk around town. But every action she takes, every choice she makes, leads to something. So if you choose a certain mission, you can earn points. In addition, every day there is a new location in the city, and the residents share new stories.

Back home, the heroine can play the game on her computer. If you pass it, there is a nice bonus. Essentially the entire Night in the Woods consists of long conversations, exploring locations, and the occasional mini-game. Despite the lack of some action, a precise plot is produced. Because each action is quite logical and is a link in a certain chain.

Features of the creation and release of the game

The game was released in 2018. Nevertheless, conversations about the idea started back in 2013. Back then, Alec Holouka (game designer) and Scott Benson (animator) decided to launch a campaign on the crowdfunding platform Kickstarter. They needed to raise $50,000, but they ended up with around $200,000.

Because of the frequent postponements of the release, indie circles have already had their own joke. The developers launched Longest Night in 2013 and Lost Constellation came out in 2014. Both games are third-party stories. However, they reveal certain details about the world shown in Night in the Woods. The main game is currently available on PC and PlayStation 4.
